The Hickman Lookout is located within the Bull Run Watershed (Portland's water supply). Lookouts staffing Hickman in the summer call in lightning strikes and suspicious smokes that can threaten the watershed with wildfire. The lookout is visible from trails on the west side of the mountain as well as Jonsrud Overlook in Sandy. Connie Athman is a hydrologist for the Mt. Hood National Forest, and she worked in the Bull Run Watershed for many years. Her watercolor paintings have won local and national awards. She is a member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon.
